Using Window Treatments to CREATE SPACE

The primary objective in interior design is to maximize the functionality and aesthetic of a space. Sometimes, in order to do that, you have to trick the eye into seeing more space than there actually is. This gives the illusion of an open, airy home - even for those with low ceilings or limited square footage. Window treatments are one of the biggest tools that an interior designer can use to make any space feel bigger.

Here are some tips and tricks you can use when selecting window treatments that will give the illusion of a larger space:

Play Up The Height.

One of the most common reasons a room might feel small or cramped is a low ceiling. But raising a ceiling is a costly and time-consuming renovation that might not be realistic in your home. A great solution is to give the illusion of more height by adding long, vertical window treatments, as shown below.

Avoid any window treatments that operate vertically, such as horizontal blinds. Instead, opt for long, vertical window treatments that open horizontally, to emphasize the space between the ceiling and the floor.

For an even more lengthening effect, hang the window treatments on a rod well above the window. And allow the window treatments to hang all the way to the floor. Adding length to your window treatments will trick the eye into seeing more height in the space!

Embrace Natural Light.

Natural light tricks the mind into perceiving that there is more space than there is. So choose window treatments that allow you to embrace the natural light in your home.

In rooms where privacy is not a concern, keep the windows as uncovered as possible. In rooms that require more coverage, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, or ground floor living areas, consider opting for light filtering drapes. These allow natural light to come through, creating the illusion of space without sacrificing privacy.

Choose Your Colors Wisely.

When it comes to choosing window treatments that make your space feel larger, color is crucial. In most cases, light neutral colors are the most successful at giving the illusion of space. Light gray, white, and other pale neutrals work well to add a feeling of openness. Dark colors are a fine line, but can definitely work to your advantage if placement is done correctly and there is a strong contrast!

Focus On The View.

If you want to add space to a room, one tactic is to bring the outside in. If you have a nice view outside your window - greenery, skylines, or a quaint street - be careful not to choose window treatments that will detract from the view outside.

If the pattern of your drapes is too busy or the colors are particularly bold, you risk distracting your guests from the view outside the window, rather than allowing the space outside to act as an extension of the indoors.

When it comes to interior design - especially in small spaces, window treatments are a beautiful and effective way to enhance a room. So make sure you’re choosing your window treatments thoughtfully and purposefully!
